Children of the Forest by Elsa Beskow

Elsa Beskow is magical. Her books are detailed and cozy, sparking all the right sorts of imagination.

This book is one of my favorite simply because of the toadstool caps. I didn't even read it and I loved it, based solely on that fact.

"Deep in the forest, under the curling roots of an old pine tree, was a small house."

I am already captivated.

Just in case you needed to see their little toadstool caps a little closer.

The four children are named Tom, Harriet, Sam and Daisy

The thing with cozy books is that too cozy is boring. So Elsa Beskow adds in dangerous snakes that their father can fight while he is safe in his pinecone armour, forest trolls, and other small little dangers that keep the book from getting sugary sweet.

First snow!

In winter they trade their red toadstool caps for cunning little green caps trimmed in white fur.

And then, spring comes around again! Joy!

December from Around the Year by Elsa Beskow

Christmas is here again,
the tree is on its way,
Lucia in her candles crown,
the family all dancing.
Santa comes with laden sack.
The snow falls thick and fast.
Christmas is here again
with parcels
and presents
and candles
and cake
and magic
and lights in the Windows.
It is Christmas
--a feast,
a festival,
of Christ.

Happy December!

February from Around the Year by Elsa Beskow

Blue skies and ice
wherever we go,
slipping and sliding
deep in the snow.

Uphill and downhill,
neither leaf nor green;
the sun bright and clear,
no grass to be seen.

Woolies and hoods,
on toboggans all day.
Gloves on our hands
and Spring far away.

Bak home Mama's baking
 big loaves and small.
How hungry we are--
we'll soon eat them all!

January from Around the Year by Elsa Beskow

Tick-tock says the clock,
it's twelve of the night.
The New Year's here
and the stars are bright.

The old year's gone,
he's tired and worn.
Christmas is past,
The tree all shorn.

The star-children come
in the dead of the night,
like three Wise men
bringing the light.

Tick-tock says the clock.
The New Year's come.
Good Year to you all
until the next to come.
