Why? by Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Life is a little confusing right now. I give you an inquisitive Rabbit and a patient Bear to explain things.

As adults, I think it is easy to forget how illogical the world is to kids. This poor little white bunny is right in the midst of figuring things out.

The rabbit just asks "Why?" and the bear, because he is such a good friend already knows the question and answers accordingly.

It is a very quick read, but on each page, there is the chance to have a discussion about something.

Isn't this sweet?

Sometimes there are no good answers. Death can be senseless.

I just love this sweet bear with his concerned face.

Then Rabbit becomes worried about bear hibernating.

"Because then I would miss my friend..."

They sit and contemplate separation and seasons.

When bear does hibernate, Rabbit sits nearby to wait.

I love this book.

For all those curious kids in your life!

Once Upon a Northern Night by Jean E. Pendziwol & Illus by Isabella Arsenault

Isn't this an adorable cover?!

Did you know Isabella Arsenault is from Montreal? So pretty much local.

Once upon a northern night
while you lay sleeping,
wrapped in a downy blanket
I painted you a picture.

The things that happen in the night...

Once upon a northern night
a mother deer led her fawn
around the silent birch
and traced
a wandering path
on my canvas of white.

They nuzzled the sleeping garden
with memories of summer,
then wandered off
ti taste the frozen fruit
still clinging to an apple tree.

The poor fox who just wants to play with the hares....

Once upon a norther night
deep,
deep,
in the darkest hours,
the snowy clouds crept away
and the stars appeared--
twinkling points of light
hanging in the purple sky.

I knew by the time you woke
the sun would have chased them away;
so I set them like diamonds
on the branches of the willow.

The writing is so poetic. The pictures so soft and gentle.

Dreamy and fitting for talking of the things that happen at night in the winter.

And then
I had the moon gently kiss you
and the wind whisper...
I love you.

I am not entirely sure who the narrator is here--the earth? The night? The world at large?

But whatever it is, it is gentle, kind, and loving.

And then, the awakening.

That first morning of waking up to a snow covered world.....

Magic!

El Deafo by Cece Bell

Look at that! A graphic novel with a Newbery! That doesn't happen often, but El Deafo definitely deserved it.

A great way for even the youngest readers to understand deafness with a lot of humor and relate-able growing pains thrown in.

Using a personified bunny as a character, Cece Bell tells her autobiography. The bunny works to make it more accessible to kids. If it was super realistic, some of these things would be a bit scary.

Here, Cece develops meningitis, is taken to a hospital where all kinds of scary tests and treatments are done.

Despite the treatment, Cece loses her hearing.

They don't notice this right away until Cece panics when her mother is not in the room. Her mother comes running and despite her calling out for Cece, Cece is running to look for her mother in a different direction because she can't hear her mother calling.

Hearing tests....

So then she gets hearing aids. Mind you, this was in the 1970's, so there was none of this "No one will even notice them!" nonsense. EVERYone will notice the things in her ears that are attached to the pouch on her front.

Eventually she can hide her hearing aid under her clothes, but even with the assistance, communication with other people is a minefield of misunderstanding.

At first, Cece goes to a school for other people with hearing difficulty. Other kids with bionic ears.

Cece being a detective trying to discern what people are saying through non-verbal cues since the audio she hears is so jumbled up. Such a great way to help young kids understand hearing problems.

Some things that make life difficult....

At her school, she feels like she is still alone in her own little world due to her hearing limitations, but at least everyone else is in the same boat or universe.

But then they move.... And there is a whole new neighborhood with kids who don't know she has hearing issues.

A close up of all the parts of the Phonic Ear that she got.

At her new school, with her Phonic Ear, the teacher wears a little microphone so Cece can hear clearly. This leads to Cece hearing what the teacher is doing in the hallway, bathroom, and teacher's lounge better than anyone else in her class.

She can even hear her teacher use the bathroom.

Tada! A superhero is born!

But what to call herself?

One night, while watching television, someone refers to someone else as el deafo. Her brother and sister think she will be upset, but she isn't. Because she just discovered her superhero name, thank you very much.

The trials of sleepovers when the light goes out. The insecurities and uncertainties of these situations are heightened to an unbearable point.

But through all of that, she was El Deafo!

The Kindness Quilt by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace

I AM SO TIRED OF SNOW. I took a walk yesterday because it was gorgeously sunshiney, even thought it was cold and windy. Within 20 minutes it was snowing like crazy. I love snow. I am a big fan of cozy snow. But I just lost my patience with it yesterday.

I want spring!

In our never ending winter, I think we could all use a dose of kindness or two in our life.

Before we talk about the plot, do you see how adorable all these cut paper bunnies are? So much texture and depth to these illustrations!

Minna's homework is to do a kind deed and draw a picture of it.

Minna reads to her little brother. But is that the best thing to draw a picture of?

Minna continues being kind while thinking of what is best to draw.

Minna started drawing and cutting out shapes.  And then she knew what to do.

A quilt square of kindness!

Everyone in class gets in on the quilt creating

Soon everyone in the school gets involved and the kindness quilt grows and grows!

Isn't that sweet? I think I might do something like this with students next year. Because lets face it, the whole world could use a little kindness.
